How to Choose the Right Windows for a Minnesota or Wisconsin Winter
Choosing replacement windows in Minnesota or Wisconsin isn't the same as choosing them in a milder climate. Our winters are hard on windows — temperature swings of 80°F or more between seasons, ice, wind, and months of sustained cold. Here's what actually matters when you're selecting windows for this region.
Start With the Energy Rating: U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain
Two numbers matter most for cold climates: U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). U-factor measures how well a window prevents heat from escaping — lower is better. For Minnesota and Wisconsin, look for a U-factor of 0.25 or lower. SHGC measures how much solar heat the window lets in — in a cold climate, a higher SHGC (0.25–0.40) on south-facing windows can actually help with passive solar heating in winter.
ENERGY STAR certifies windows for specific climate zones. Make sure any window you're considering is certified for the "Northern" zone, which covers most of MN and WI.
Frame Material: What Holds Up in Our Climate
Vinyl is the most popular choice for good reason — it doesn't rot, doesn't need painting, and handles temperature extremes well. Quality vinyl frames use multi-chamber construction that adds insulation value. Look for reinforced corners and UV-stabilized material so the frames don't become brittle over time.
Fiberglass is the premium option. It expands and contracts at nearly the same rate as glass, which means better long-term seal integrity through our extreme temperature swings. It's also stronger than vinyl, which matters for larger window openings.
Wood can be beautiful but requires more maintenance in our climate. If you go with wood, make sure it's properly primed, painted, and sealed — and plan to repaint every 5–7 years.
Aluminum conducts cold readily and isn't recommended as a primary frame material for our climate without a thermal break.
Double vs. Triple Pane: Is Triple Worth It?
For most homes in the St. Croix Valley, high-quality double-pane windows with low-E coating and argon fill will deliver excellent performance. Triple-pane windows offer marginally better insulation and are worth considering for north-facing windows or homes with very large window areas, but the cost premium is significant. In most cases, a quality double-pane unit is the right call.
Low-E Coating: Don't Skip It
Low-emissivity (low-E) coatings are a thin metallic layer on the glass that reflects heat back into the room in winter (and keeps heat out in summer). For our climate, this is not optional — it's the single biggest performance upgrade over standard glass. Make sure any window you're considering includes a low-E coating rated for cold climates.
Work With a Contractor Who Knows the Region
The best window in the world underperforms if it's installed incorrectly. Proper flashing, air sealing, and insulation around the frame are just as important as the window itself.
